According to Mr. Branan and agreed upon by many others, myself included…this could be one of the most simply brilliant lines of all time. I had heard rumors about a Lucero Tribute album. On the offhand I asked Cory what he would do, and he said this song. I flipped out, ’cause, if I was picking songs for Cory to cover, this would totally be THE ONE. So, this comes from the lovely folks at Hardcore Troubadours, and it’s a cut from their Cory Branan/Ben Nichols podcast. If you don’t have it, or didn’t get it, hop on over there and download it. You might just get a chance to hear Ben Nichols of Lucero cover a Cory song.

Now that we’ve got the nice stuff out of the way, let’s get on to business! Cory is TOURING ALASKA! What the hell, yeah? I see it now. Northern Lights. Igloos. Eskimos. Reindeer. I think all the blonde hair references of Cory’s music may just escape them! In all seriousness, I think this is astounding…and super cool. This is straight from the Branan Blogs:

(A Note on California - The Pasadena show is a Cory show whereas the Hotel Cafe show is as well but is an hour long set that starts promptly at 8pm). Cory will be Drag the River’s main support in Forest Lake, San Diego and Glendale. Autoplay

Monday, October 1st, 2007

You have spoken. We have listened. In order to bring you eggs without hair in them, and sweet tea without fingers, the videos will now be in ‘play-as-you-go’ thanks to all your comments. Thank you so much for them. I’m pretty much a post it up, and leave it up, then change it. Didn’t realize it was such as hassel and I do greatly apologize.

Well, on to the good stuff. Please check the dates at Cory’s Myshrine to see some exciting stuff. One of the most exciting moments for me is that he is playing with J. Roddy Walston and the Business in Nashville AND Memphis dates. If you can make it out there, you will not soon regret the rock and roll awesomeness that is Mr. Branan and the Business. On a serious note, J Roddy and them have single handedly renewed my faith that real Rock and Roll is possible. Here’s a non-autoplaying video for you if you want to check out what is to come:

And for those of you who haven’t seen a good Homemade Cory Video in a while, this one should tickle you.

And the first 5 people to write a cory themed hiaku will get an mp3 of my choosing via email.

All the best,

Management

The Long Awaited Video

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

Sorry for the long delay of posting, etc. I’ve been in San Francisco on business all of last week. Saw the bay where hearts get washed up on black rocks, and the like. Beautiful…chilly. All in all, very nice.

Yeah, I’d love to get right down to the nitty gritty viddy, but, there is some buzz in the Branan Camp. There is said to possibly be some sort of television spot kind of thing in the works. The likeliness of this happening is kinda slim, but, it’s still to my knowledge, a possibility. So those of you who know about the VH1 show several years back (and if you don’t, surprise there was a pilot!) I’m currently working on getting that up here in time, and we could possibly see something of the same ilk ‘fore too long.

Those of you who are going to Mucklewain, please be safe and have fun. Get some videos, mp3s, pictures, whatever…and send them on in!

So, with permission, and get it while it lasts…Cory on Carson:

On a related note, I’d like to know how you feel about the autoplay feature. So please comment either positively or negatively. Doesn’t matter to me much, but, if it’s annoying, or you like it, make a comment.

All the best,

management.

*PS - A big shout out to Wayne Voit for fighting the good fight with the crazies over at some other message board that wouldn’t know what good music was if it was killing their ficus tree while simultaneously pouring sugar in their gas tank.

Man. Oh, man.

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

I hope that those of y’all that made it to see the wonderful Mr. Branan, amoung other fabulous talents, at the Lucero Family Picnic, were much impressed. Man, that sure was some sort of a line up…The Glossary, Cory, Southern Bitch, Two Cow Garage, just to name a very few!

If any of y’all have Cory videos from the picnic, send’em on in! I do want to take time to thank Sarita for sharing with us her tattoo story. It’s kinda like that FUSE TV show, of the same name, but not…and very Branan involved.

So, for your hung-over, and partially boozed out from the post labor-day return to labor, I stumbled about this video. It’s coming from ‘Hep810′ a.k.a. Helena (one of the coolest folks you could meet) who tour manages American Aquarium. We friended this weekend on youtube, and she has this video up. So, if you like seeing Cory with a full band, here you go!

And if you have any stories from the Lucero Family Picnic…also let me know!

Hellbent & Heartfirst (The Tattoo)

Monday, August 27th, 2007

When I first met Sarita, she told me this story. It was so awesome that I decided if I ever got a chance to do a site like this one…that this would be a story. You are sorta familiar with her from the ‘Belly dancing Cory Vid’. Well, after much prodding, Sarita has decided to share that story with us here at the diner. Sarita, I can’t thank you enough, and I hope y’all enjoy it too. Here it is, in her own words:

For over a decade I longed for a tattoo, but just never found a design idea that inspired me enough. I thought I had at one point, until my girlfriend at the time made it into a necklace. I figured there was no point in getting a tattoo: “Hey, if you like how this looks in silver, check it out in the FLESH!” I lost the necklace a few years later but by then I’d lost the desire for that design, too (still miss the necklace, though).

In spring of 2006, some good friends of mine (Mimi and Cricket from Last of the Hardcore Troubadours) introduced me to Cory’s music. I first heard “Tall Green Grass,” and liked it all right. Shortly thereafter I procured both albums and fell hard and fast. I’m big into lyrics and, well, y’all know. Cory’s got that way with words. That summer I got obsessed with the song “Hellbent and Heartfirst.” Not so much with the “love at first sight” bit, but the idea of “skipping past the salt pillars where everybody turns back” and that “nothing scars you deeper than the things you haven’t done.” I tend to overthink myself into inaction, and loved the song title as a reminder to quit thinking so damn much and just GO. That, and the Miami Vice reference. I’ve spent MANY perfect moments geeking out about TV shows.

I started doodling on my arm in Sharpie when bored. I knew I wanted a heart, but couldn’t figure out the rest of the design - a Traditional American piece just didn’t fit my style. During a tattoo-obsessed weekend at the beach with a very patient longtime friend of mine, we happened to see this print and it hit me that I could do something similar, hiding the text in the linework. I got in touch with my friend and fellow dancer, Sara Beaman, about creating a design that would incorporate Cory’s lyrics into something that fit my personality.

Here’s the result:

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

It’s the word “hellbent,” in an elaborate henna tattoo style. There are heart shapes in it, both from the observer’s angle and mine. The left side says “hell” and the right “bent.” The “h” and “b” are large and stylized lowercase letters; the “ell” and the “ent” are contained in each one, respectively. If you don’t see it, well, just ask me at a show. I’ll be happy to point it out.

I like that it’s elegant, yet big enough to be kind of badass. I like that I can choose to explain as much or as little as I please. I like that it gives me another opportunity to tell people just how awesome Cory’s music is. I love that it’s a daily reminder and inspiration for how I want to live my life; that the tattoo itself is an exercise in making a decision, acting on it, and living with the consequences.

Thanks to Cory for the words, and Sara for the design, and Tom Blackmar at Tattoo Asylum in Durham, NC, for bringing it all to life. Oh, and caseymagic for prompting me to tell the story.

You better buy the room a round…

My sincerest apologies for not updating lately. But, I’ll do my best to give it a good go here.

Firstly, I’d like to apologize for the ‘Beat It’ cover. Namely because it’s not the full version with the Eddie V. Solo, and secondly, incase the thrilling picture of M.J. was such that it sent you into childhood flashbacks, thriller jackets, and old school MTv.

Secondly, the ladies at Hardcore Troubadours have put up a Brew City-ish podcast complete with Ben Nichols and Cory Branan. Give them much love, if you haven’t already. If you haven’t been there, then please, check it out!

Thirdly, BoogieMann himself, found a site that had some Cory Branan tabs on it, right HERE.

Fourthly, but not leastly, here’s another video of a fiddlish ho-down, with Cory Branan and Sarah Mann playing ‘Sour Mash’.

New Week. New Sarah.

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

I know that a lot of you are hung over from reading Harry Potter. And if you aren’t hung over from reading the Harry Potter, maybe it’s because you are still looking for a copy to read. And if none of this makes any kind of sense to you…well you and I are in the same boat.

I would like to start off by saying to you, Ezra, that show is so awesome. For those of you who know what I am talking about…well, you know. For everyone else…you will be praising Ezra’s name from atop Mount Ararat, as you might be getting a download of Cory Branan covering ‘Beat it’, or, many many other great sound board tunes. Ezra, you are the man, and for that special sharing, I’m making something up for you real soon. The few mp3’s that I sent you will do you no justice for sharing something like that with us. So big thanks to you.

For my second shout-out…just when you thought Cory’s music couldn’t get ANY better…along comes a diner member. Funny enough her name is Sarah, too. When she’s not rocking her ‘Hellbent & Heartfirst’ Tattoo, or putting me off by blatently not writing up a little thing about it to share with us here (hint. hint.) she’s a practicing Belly Dancer. What could go well with a Bran-tastic version of Girl Named Go in Charlotte? If you guessed ‘Belly Dancing’…you’d be right. So thanks to Sarah for having this shot and sending it over to us here at Diner Central. Enjoy!

And truly, I want to thank everyone here. I think with each week that passes, people get more into Last Chance Diner, and after this past tour, and everyone helping out, there will be a little bit extra sugar in everyone’s sweet tea. So, this is a big thank you to everyone that links to us from a blog, or tells a friend, or just enjoys this place in general.

Thank you.

Love,

Management (aka People who act like Brian Mann’s ex-girlfriend)

Happy Birthday, Infamous J…

Monday, June 25th, 2007

Just want to take a moment to give a Birthday Shout-out to Infamous J. S/He lurks the shadows of clubs, smoking camel lights, and buying drinks for nice folks. And when s/He’s not fighting off the gravity of Planetary, Men in Dress, or Faux French crazies…they love listening to some Cory Branan. So much so, they should most definitely know this one is for them…mos def.

Waxahachie

Monday, June 18th, 2007

So, big thanks to Nathan (aka Nate), for sending this video over. It’s from the Ben & Cory Tour this summer, so, if you are like me and are a victim of unfortunate geography (i.e. the tour isn’t coming anywhere remotely nearby), then this video is especially for you…and yourn.

I’ve done my best to clean up the audio, but, I guess, as they say about Texas, everything is bigger…including the crowd chattering.

And here is another one, which is probably one of the funniest covers that he does, but, you’ll just have to listen to figure out what it is. I remember asking him a long time ago to play a song that ‘he’ wanted to play…and he played this. Too funny.
